The Collections

Absolute masterpiece and heart of the collection is the painting “San Sebastiano” by Andrea Mantegna, for which the Baron Franchetti made build a chapel adorned by marbles, at whose centre there is an altar where is preserved the painting, one of the most dramatic works of the artist.

On the first floor are exhibited some masterpieces of the Renaissance’s sculpture, for example the “Doppio Ritratto” by Tullio Lombardo, inspired by the ancient funerary sculpture, the “Busto di Fanciullo” by Gian Cristoforo Romano, of Franchetti’s collection, and the Jacopo Sansovino‘s bas-relief lunette, with his painting “Madonna col Bambino”.
Moreover, among the bronzes, there are the precious reliefs by Andrea Riccio, coming from the Church of Slaves, and the “Apollo” by Jacopo Bonaccolsi called “the ancient”, coming from Pasqualigo’s collection.

The most important pieces of the collection, located on the second floor, are unmissable; they are the “Venere allo Specchio” by Tiziano, the “Venere dormiente” by Paris Bordon, the two lanscape painting by Francesco Guardi, and, among the most important Flemish works, the little “Crocifissione” attributed to Jan Van Eyck, and the “Ritratto di Marcello Durazzo” by Van Dyck.
